PSA's embedded systems expertise, including proficiency with Toradex System on Modules (SoMs), proved crucial for Duvall Espresso. Since late 2023, PSA has been working with the startup, whose patented technology delivers consistent flavor profiles independent of grind size, tamp, and dose, to move their product from prototype to market.

HMI Flexibility
PSA implemented improved human machine interface (HMI) screens for better user experience built in Electron with HTML5.
Peripheral Interface Management
The module’s onboard Toradex BSP manages all peripheral interfaces and communication protocols, including RS-232, Ethernet, Flash, UART and Modbus.

The Challenge: Implement Patented Coffee Brewing Technology
The customer needed to find a trusted engineering partner to certify and successfully launch to market a brand new coffee machine, ensuring its high competitive advantage. Previous experience with engineering companies outside the Toradex partner ecosystem had resulted in performance issues.

The Objective: Create a Market-ready Product
The goal of the customer was to refine the firmware of the commercial coffee machine prototype in order to produce a market-ready product and provide the highest performance and UX with cutting-edge technology. Toradex recommended working with PSA, as a proven Toradex partner with extensive experience in product engineering.

The Solution: Toradex Colibri iMX7D System on Module
Having a firmware MVP with limited functionality, PSA provided significant enhancements to ensure failure-free operation and consistent control for the machine powered by a robust and feature-rich Toradex Colibri iMX7D SoM.
PSA thoroughly examined the firmware source code and recreated the development environment to empower the system with the following features:- Optimized business logic for correct system operation
- Functional stability regardless of external factors
- Possibility of firmware updates
- Synchronization between devices comprising a coffee machine
- Improved HMI screens for better UX

The Outcome: High Performance, Easy-to-use and Extensive Customization
As a result, the performance issues were eliminated and the client got an easy-to-use coffee machine with extensive customization options for coffee extraction without compromising performance. While the product is undergoing certification, PSA continues to support its further upgrades before the market launch.
