Enhancing Urban Safety and Traffic Flow with KING ICT’s Fusion Edge Device

KING ICT specializes in developing advanced ICT and smart city solutions across critical infrastructure, transportation, and security sectors. Faced with the challenge of improving traffic flow and safeguarding roadside communication equipment in increasingly complex urban environments, KING ICT sought a way to bring real-time intelligence to intersections. They developed the Fusion Edge Device (FED), integrating cameras, sensors, and traffic controllers to make instant, data-driven decisions at the edge. The result: safer, smarter intersections that adapt dynamically to traffic conditions while ensuring the security and reliability of critical city systems

Highlights

Real-Time Edge Intelligence

The Fusion Edge Device (FED) collects and analyzes data from cameras, sensors, and traffic controllers directly at intersections, enabling instant, automated decision-making for adaptive traffic management.

Smart Traffic with Physical Security

Combines smart traffic control with infrastructure protection, detecting incidents like red-light violations and monitoring access to roadside cabinets for tampering or intrusion, all reinforced by TPM-backed secure communication and device integrity.

Toradex SoMs are the core of our FED - Fusion Edge Device. Their modules provide the performance and, crucially, the scalability we need to serve demanding applications in traffic management and critical infrastructure security. Backed by high-quality, responsive technical support, we feel confident in future perspective.

KING ICT’s journey with Toradex

  • The Challenge: Smarter, safer intersections for modern cities

As cities grow more complex, managing traffic flow and ensuring the security of critical infrastructure have become top priorities. KING ICT saw the need for an intelligent edge device that could bring real-time decision-making to the street level. Traditional traffic systems often rely on static signal timing and disconnected sensors, which limits responsiveness to dynamic road conditions and makes them vulnerable to on-site tampering. KING ICT’s goal was to build a robust, modular platform capable of integrating traffic analytics, camera inputs, and security sensors, all in real time at the edge.

  • The Solution: Fusion edge device built with the Toradex Verdin iMX8M Mini and Torizon OS

To meet these challenges, KING ICT developed the Fusion Edge Device (FED), a ruggedized, multi-purpose edge controller that unifies data from cameras, sensors, and industrial controllers for real-time decision-making.

At the core of the FED is the Verdin iMX8M Mini, chosen for its modularity, scalability, and great value for cost. The Verdin module handles:

    • Integration of diverse input systems, including cameras and traffic controllers
    • Security management for roadside communication cabinets, including tamper detection, shock sensing, and access logging

  • Outcome: Real-time intelligence for safer, smarter cities

Each FED enables adaptive traffic light control based on vehicle detection, helping reduce congestion and emissions, while the built-in intrusion protection ensures continuous operation of critical roadside systems.

    Key results include:
    • Adaptive signal control using live camera data for smoother traffic flow
    • Reduced incident response time through real-time event detection (e.g., vehicles crossing red lights or moving in the wrong direction)
    • Enhanced infrastructure security with tamper and access monitoring for on-site cabinets

Powered by the Verdin iMX8M Mini

The Fusion Edge Device is built on the Verdin iMX8M Mini, giving it the performance, connectivity, and modularity required for reliable edge intelligence.

Robust processing for real-time decisions

Quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 CPU handles traffic analytics, sensor fusion, and event processing directly at the intersection.

Flexible connectivity for diverse peripherals

Ethernet, RS-485, UART, GPIO, and I²C enable integration with IP cameras, traffic light controllers, access control readers, and cabinet monitoring sensors.

Modular software architecture

Supports Docker-based application deployment on a custom Linux OS, allowing clean separation of functions like traffic analytics, cabinet security, and communication services.

Strong security foundation

Works seamlessly with an onboard TPM chip, secure boot configurations, and TLS 1.3 communication for end-to-end protection.

Industrial reliability in the field

Designed for long-term availability and harsh environments, ensuring stable operation across distributed city infrastructure.

Scalable for future upgrades

The Verdin pin-to-pin compatibility gives KING ICT a clear path to next-generation modules, like the Verdin iMX95, for enhanced AI acceleration and expanded functionality.

Built with

Torizon OS

The Fusion Edge Device runs on Torizon OS, giving KING ICT a secure, reliable, and developer-friendly foundation for their edge applications.

Containerized software deployment

Torizon’s built-in Docker support lets KING ICT package traffic analytics, cabinet security, and integration services as isolated, maintainable modules.

Simplified development workflow

Ready-to-use tooling, drivers, and a consistent Linux base reduce ramp-up time and streamline updates across devices in the field.

Robust security out of the box

Torizon provides hardened OS components, secure boot support, and a clean path for integrating the TPM-based encryption and TLS 1.3 used in the FED.

Reliable operation in production

The OS ensures stable, predictable behavior across deployments, aligning well with the long-term lifecycle demands of smart city infrastructure.
