1080 Motion’s Journey with Toradex

  • The Challenge: Building a Robust, Rapid-Response Training System

1080 Motion, a pioneer in advanced athletic training technology, sought to develop its Sprint 2 product, a cutting-edge system designed for precise motion analysis and performance enhancement. Faced with challenges from previous x86 and ARM platform trials, 1080 Motion turned to Toradex and the Verdin iMX8M Plus for a robust System on Module that could power their human-machine interface. Their vision demanded a powerful, scalable and reliable embedded platform with ample flexibility, at an affordable price.

  • The objective: Create a market-ready product

The system required unbreakable reliability, with a robust emergency recovery mechanism to eliminate the risk of bricking and ensure continuous operation. It also needed a seamless, secure method for deploying software updates—avoiding vulnerable SD cards and cumbersome USB sticks—and a near-instantaneous boot time to minimize downtime and maximize training efficiency. To deliver a smooth and responsive user interface, the platform had to support OpenGL profiles, while providing the customization and control of an Embedded Linux environment built on Yocto. Easy access to key hardware features, such as the Verdin board’s built-in recovery button, was essential for commissioning and troubleshooting, and all of this had to be achieved in a powerful yet cost-effective solution.

  • The Solution: Verdin iMX8M Plus – Power, Reliability, and Speed

1080 Motion leveraged the Verdin’s recovery button—accessible even before the bootloader—to provide the emergency recovery and commissioning capabilities needed to eliminate bricking risks. They implemented a remote update system for reliable subsystem updates, sidestepping the vulnerabilities inherent in SD cards and USB sticks. The Verdin iMX8M Plus module delivered superior power efficiency and cost savings compared to alternative modules. By building on a Yocto-based Embedded Linux environment, they achieved deep customization and control. Toradex modules seamlessly managed UI and connectivity—interfacing with a microcontroller running RTOS for motor control—and Flutter running in Kiosk mode solved compatibility issues encountered with Avalonia. The LVDS display was driven directly from the Verdin module without a bridge chip, and 1080 Motion’s custom carrier board design provided easy hardware access while benefiting from Toradex’s generic carrier board offerings.

  • The outcome: Enhanced Performance and Accelerated Development

The combination of the Verdin’s recovery button and a robust update system provided exceptional reliability, stability, and minimal downtime. Development was accelerated by the Verdin’s well-documented hardware, proactive community support, and seamless Yocto integration. Performance was enhanced by the module’s powerful GPU and efficient processing, meeting the demands of advanced motion analysis and responsive interfaces. Startup times were dramatically reduced, and the Verdin’s power efficiency and competitive pricing yielded a cost-effective solution. Finally, the module’s accessible hardware design simplified integration, making commissioning and troubleshooting
