Orchestrating Domestic Power with the SPAN Smart Panel

The electrified future demands domestic power networks to balance supply from domestic production, the grid, consumption, and storage, while accommodating high-power devices like EV charging stations.

The SPAN Smart Panel offers full control over power sourcing, consumption, and storage, aiming to revolutionize power management. To meet consumer demand for an intuitive and cost-effective connected electrical panel capable of meeting these expectations, SPAN transitioned to Toradex Verdin CoM, providing ample capacity to grow.

Highlights

Creating a reliable, scalable, and future-proof nervous system for the home

SPAN's device is a competent and future-proof smart electric panel for domestic and commercial buildings, Indoor & Outdoor rated. The solution flawlessly handles power and energy management in the home, handling up to 32 controllable circuits. It's powered by an NXP® i.MX 8MM-based SoC - the Verdin iMX8M Mini Computer on Module - which offers power-optimized 64-bit performance with pre-certified wireless connectivity, features modern interfaces including Gigabit Ethernet, MIPI CSI-2 Camera, MIPI DSI Display, PCIe, Quad SPI, and CAN.

SPAN OS

Hosted on the CoM, the spanOS, SPAN’s Linux-based operating system based on Toradex BSP, handles the OS, power management and IoT functions.

Verdin at Scale

Powered by Toradex's future-oriented hardware, SPAN maintains a competitive edge with the Verdin Computer on Module family. That provides an opportunity to expand their product range and scale performance to meet emerging user needs.

Connectivity

The SPAN smart panel has three connectivity options: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Cellular LTE. With its full connectivity stack, SPAN allows the load center to connect with other intelligent devices and 3rd party smart devices and perform over-the-air updates.

Toradex’s Verdin module family provided the scalability and volume support that we were looking for. Its standard form factor and compatibility made it easy to integrate into our system, while pin compatibility across the family helped us grow our product portfolio and effectively address customer needs.

SPAN’s Journey with Toradex

  • Bringing Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) capabilities to the consumer market

To increase their resiliency and guarantee service during external grid and connectivity outages, SPAN set out to find a powerful computer-on-module (CoM) capable of handling edge computing and processing as well as reliable and secure over-the-air updates. Additionally, they needed industrial-grade operating temperatures to ensure robust performance in harsh working environments. They found their ideal solution in our Verdin iMX8M Mini CoM with its low thermal footprint and wide range of connectivity options and peripherals.

  • Streamlining the transition to the Toradex CoM

Having selected the Verdin iMX8M Mini for their upgraded design, the product developers at SPAN had to migrate their existing solution and software to the Toradex CoM, which would integrate into their custom-designed carrier board. They worked closely with our application engineers to address compatibility issues and optimize the performance of spanOS, their custom Linux-based operating system, which is based on Toradex BSP (Board Support Packages) layers. This allowed the team at SPAN to efficiently port their software to the new platform. At the same time, Toradex’s standard industrial form factors made it easy to integrate the CoM onto the existing hardware, freeing up time for the team at SPAN to develop and optimize other aspects of their solution.

  • Enhancing performance and quality while keeping down costs

By transitioning to the Verdin CoM, SPAN was able to offer end-users enhanced monitoring and control capabilities covering all circuits in the building, including high-power loads, providing a less complex system with increased visibility. Verdin’s competitive price helped keep down the cost of the final product, growing its market potential by making it accessible to a wide range of customers. Moreover, the pin compatibility across the Verdin family let SPAN address diverse market demands, from low-end to high-end solutions.

Toradex’s ability to move fast has proven invaluable, allowing us to accelerate our progress without getting bogged down by driver or compatibility issues. Based on our positive experience, we wholeheartedly recommend Toradex's solutions to peers seeking reliable, future-proof, and scalable hardware solutions for their projects.
